Networked perimeter protection with the Zone-D Security Laser Sensor

There are more and more security risks in all areas of life. With the Zone-D laser sensor, DENSO has developed an innovative safety system.

According to Statista, the security surveillance sector is a growing market: security revenue is expected to grow rapidly annually. DENSO WAVE has developed the Zone-D Laser Sensor as a new innovation. The modern laser sensor can precisely detect the position of moving objects and thus enables reliable protection of all types of areas. Viv Bradshaw, Manager Business Development Europe and Technology Consultant at DENSO WAVE EUROPE, explains: “Linear sensors or light barriers are often used. However, these only work from point to point and can therefore be tricked out relatively easily. The Zone-D laser sensor, on the other hand, scans entire surfaces in a large radius, which makes unauthorised entry into a property more difficult.”

If the Zone-D is connected to other equipment for perimeter protection, such as PTZ cameras, lights or sirens, the laser sensor can send signals to the connected equipment and activate it as soon as it detects a suspicious object. The laser sensor is able to differentiate between people, animals, cars and other objects. Thanks to this filter function of the Zone-D, false alarms can be reduced significantly. In addition, the Zone-D laser sensor works reliably in all lighting conditions: it can detect objects in the dark or in strong lighting conditions of up to 100,000 lux. Even rain or fog are no problem for the innovative safety sensor.

How the Zone-D laser sensor works

The Zone-D laser sensor scans surfaces of approximately 60 by 30 meters. The highlight: the scanned surfaces can be divided into various freely formable zones and individual actions per zone can be configured. For example, a green zone can be defined as a zone in which no alarm has to be triggered if an object is moving in it. However, if a zone needs special protection, it can be defined, for example, as a red zone in which an alarm is activated as soon as an intruder enters it. In this case, the advanced Zone-D Security System can send a notification directly to the user's computer or surveillance area. If an intruder is detected in the surveillance area, the Zone-D activates the connected camera and automatically zooms it in to track the intruder and record their actions. At this moment, an email is automatically sent to the user's device. To prevent damage to the property, additional deterrent systems, such as lamps, signal lights or sirens, can also be activated in critical zones. Remote verbal warnings are possible, as can locks to prevent damage, all while the intruder is being watched in real time. Live videos can be checked with connected portable terminals such as PCs and smartphones.

The Zone-D Security Sensor System during the COVID-19 pandemic

In the current situation, social distancing has become the new norm. The Zone-D laser sensor can help to enforce distance compliance. By specifying certain zones, people are recorded who are outside the respective zone. If a corresponding movement is detected outside the marked zone, the Zone-D laser sensor can play back a recorded announcement and ensure that the recommended distance is kept. In addition, a PTZ camera can view the respective person and track their reaction, so that security personnel can intervene if necessary. The Zone-D laser sensor also supports crossing detection lines. These can be used where entrances and exits are specially marked. For example, people can be detected if they take the wrong path. This Zone-D-Laser Sensor feature can also be used to detect when a position at a ticket counter becomes available, to notify customers in the queue that the counter is free, allowing them to move up quickly. Some example applications, particularly in Corona times, include queues for supermarkets, border or passport controls, and admission controls in theme parks or at conferences.

Various application areas

The areas of application in which the Zone-D laser sensor can be used are diverse: from car dealerships and shops to factories and logistics companies to level crossings, airports and power and water plants. The Zone-D Security System can be used perfectly in both public and private areas. It can detect vehicles and see customers entering stores or car dealerships, can safely manage shipments or safely monitor power plant equipment. In Japan, home of the Toyota Group, the Zone-D laser sensor has already been successfully implemented in around 500 projects. The modern security sensor is also used successfully in other countries, such as Singapore, where it helps to protect a water reservoir. These projects show that the laser sensor is ideally suited for monitoring critical infrastructure. For example, Zone-D monitors level crossings and subway stations, airports, and water, electricity and gas plants. “Although the security sector is a new patch for DENSO WAVE in Europe, thanks to references in Japan, Singapore or Thailand, we can already prove that our product increases security wherever it is used. And we look forward to protecting even more businesses and people with our Zone-D,” summarizes Bradshaw.
